Scholarship Fundation

Coach William Matthew DeBarr, Jr. son of the late William Matthew DeBarr, Sr. and Ruby Grant of Charleston, SC was born in Charleston, SC where he received his education in the Charleston County Public School System. He attended the Avery Institute for a portion of high school and completed his high school education at the Burke Technical College in Denmark, SC.

 

Coach DeBarr attended church for many years at Morris Brown A.M.E. Church in Charleston, SC. He become a devoted member and received water baptism at the historic Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Hilton Head Island, SC in 2017.

Coach DeBarr was renown for his participation in community reports as a coach of the Hilton Head Island Gators football teams and as an assistant coach for numerous years at Hilton Head High School. His compassion for sports led him to become the founder of the "Fastlane" Track Club on Hilton Head Island where his team participated in the Jr. Olympics in Clemson, SC, Virginia and medalled in the Jr. Olympics in California and Texas. Coach DeBarr was an unofficial assistant coach for every sport in the Hilton Head/Bluffton area and was inducted into the Hilton Head High School Hall of Fame in 2019. Coach DeBarr will be remembered by so many young people for his athletic mentorship that he provided with so much compassion and tenacity. We will always cherish those memories of seeing Coach DeBarr in the bleachers, on the sideline and at the pre-game ceremonies.

 

During Coach DeBarr retirement years, he started playing spades. Along with his son, William DeBarr Ill, and daughter in-law, Angela Kidd-DeBarr. They started a local spades tournaments. One of Coach DeBarr's visions was to bring national recognition to Quality Spades Tournament to Hilton Head Island and surrounding areas. With community support, we can help to achieve his vision.
