History
of Spades
Spades, a descendant
of the card game Whist, is believed to have been introduced in Cincinnati, Ohio
in the timeframe between 1937 and 1939.
Closely similar to Bridge, Euchre and Pinochle, Spades is a game of
trump suit, bidding and partnership. The
game of Spades became popular on college campuses in the late 1940s. Also a popular past-time within the military,
Spades was played extensively during World War II. Spades has had a continuous steady growth and
now has national recognition – reportedly, the number one partnership card game
in the United States.
